Chiefs of Toak Village Celebrate Chief’s Day with Unity and Tradition

The vibrant culture and traditional leadership of South East Ambrym were proudly celebrated on March 5th, as the chiefs and people of Toak Village gathered to mark National Chief’s Day.

The event was held at the heart of Toak Village, bringing together chiefs from all the nakamals in Toak to show solidarity and respect for one another, and to honour the role of traditional authority in Vanuatu society.

The celebration featured traditional ceremonies, speeches from community leaders, and moments of reflection on the importance of unity, peace, and cultural identity.

Speaking during the event, one of the local chiefs said:

“Chief’s Day is not just about celebrating titles, but about reminding ourselves of the responsibility we carry to guide, protect, and unite our people. It is also about passing this respect and knowledge on to the younger generation.”

The day served as a powerful reminder of the strength of kastom and the deep connection between the people and their chiefs. Community members, youth, and visitors all came together in a spirit of joy and respect.
